Hong Kong, May 29, 2009 - (ACN Newswire) - The following is an excerpt from IRG's TMT Weekly Market Review May 18 - May 24. IRG is a financial advisory and investment firm focused on the core growth sectors in Asia with particular focus on the telecommunications, media and technology (TMT) sectors. - Worldwide mobile-phone sales dropped 9.4 percent in the first quarter, the industrys first year-on- year contraction. The economic slowdown curtailed consumer spending in regions including Asia Pacific, traditionally the market booster inthe period. Nokia Oyj lost market share, while Samsung Electronics and LG Electronics gained. Sales declined to 269.1 million units in the three months through March from a year earlier. Sales registered the biggest quarter-on-quarter fall since Gartner began monitoring the market on a quarterly basis in 2001. Inventory de-stocking added 25 million units into sales channels, Gartner said, adding that it expects stock reductions to continue into the second quarter. Gartner repeated a predictionthat global handset sales will fall 4 percent this year. Industry unit sales will fall 10 percent this year. Nokias market share in the quarter fell to 36.2 percent from 39.1 percent a year earlier. Samsung was in second place with a 19.1 percent share, up from 14.4 percent. LG Electronics ranked third with 9.9 percent. Motorolas share fell to 6.2 percent from 10.2 percent, while Sony Ericsson dropped to 5.4 percent from 7.5 percent.
